INTRODUCTION

Our collaborative project on different music trends in each country introduces two types of music trends and a popular music festival in each country. We were interested to see if any music that was listened in one country, was popular in another. We are identifying similar music trends, and a group that is popular in both Italy and America.

ITALY

Rock Music

The most famous band in Italy is Negramaro, a new Italian phenomenon that in few years have reached an important place in the national music scene. Their last album “La Finestra “, with more than 100,000 copies sold, was one of the most popular albums in Italy in 2007. They are a band that plays rock music but is mixed with traditional melodies and elecrtic beats. At the scheduled venues, Negramaro's tickets sell immediately.

American music in Italy

Italians love their music but they appreciate also American and British music, especially young people. The most famous foreign artists in Italy are the American Red Hot Chili Peppers and Madonna.

Madonna, is an American singer very popular worldwide since the 80’s. Her first album was released in 1983 but her career was revived in 1998 with the album Ray of Light. She is called also “the queen of pop” and has been regarding as one of the greatest pop artist of all time. Now she is on an international tour to promote her new album Hard Candy. Madonna is also an actress. In 1997 she won a Golden Globe as Best Actress for her role in the movie “Evita". In 2003 and 2007 she wrote a series of children’s books.

San Remo- Festival of Italian Music

sanremo07.jpg

The first musical festival in San Remo was held in 1951, a few years after the end of World War II. The festival was broadcasted on the radio and there were only three singers. On the following year, the number of participating singers increased to five and then to ten in 1953.

Great Italian artists have performed on the Festival stage and their songs also marked an important moment in history. The town and the Festival have a close and deep connection. It is held at the Ariston Theatre where a huge audience keeps waiting for the singers, or outside the hotels where the singers stay during the Festival. When the Festival starts, the town is filled by a peculiar atmosphere is full of colorful lights. Once preparations are over, the list of performers are ready, the stage is set, and the audience is patiently sitting in the hall, then the show can start. The festival take place every year in February. In 1984 the festival created a new category named "Nuove Proposte", an award for the best new artist. The record of victories belongs to Claudio Villa and Domenico Modugno with 4 victories each. The majority of the most famous italian tv personalities have hosted the festival. The record belongs to Pippo Baudo who hosted thirteen edition of the festival (the first one in 1968 and the last one this year).

POLAND

Behemoth

Behemoth.jpg

Behemoth has always pushed the limits of their abilities and defied the boundaries of death and black metal. Now, the Polish metal kings have returned with a new offering, The Apostasy, which is destined to become both the defining release of the band's career and one of the most revered and dynamic offerings the genre has seen in years. The Apostasy's basic meaning is "to go against religion," and with Poland being one of the top religious countries in the world, Behemoth strives to convey that being religious is not the key to happiness. This album takes everything to the next level, as Nergal (guitars, vocals) promises "more speed, aggression and blasphemy than ever before." The Apostasy is easily the group's most ambitious and epic offering yet and was recorded in the band's hometown of Gdansk with Nergal and longtime sound engineer Malta in the producers' chairs. The effort was once again mixed with the acclaimed Daniel Bergstrand (In Flames, Meshuggah, SYL) at Dugout Studios in Sweden and will be mastered by Bjorn Engelmann (Rammstein).

Behemoth built their career upon their unrelenting touring schedule, performing over 325 shows worldwide in support of their 2005 release, Demigod. The group kicks off The Apostasy's worldwide touring cycle on Ozzfest 2007 as direct support to second-stage headliners Hatebreed. This event marks BEHEMOTH's biggest U.S. tour yet, further setting the stage for the band to become the new leaders of the genre.

Vader

There are very few bands that have managed to weave a web of mystery around them. Very few have survived and kept going strong until today. When faced with the question 'which' people tend to mention American death-mongers with the likes of MORBID ANGEL, DEICIDE or CANNIBAL CORPSE … However, for a few years now in the same breath many have named VADER - perhaps the only band from Europe which has sustained it´s status for a number of years. Theirs is the cult of musical brutality and the urge to succeed. Few may remember that VADER were the first band ever from behind "the Iron Curtain" to sign to a Western label while their 1990 demo "Morbid Reich" is still considered to be the best selling demo tape in the history of death metal.

The International Festival of Wratislavia Cantans started 40 years ago with a conductor Andrzej.  The festival included chamber concerts, recitals and the visual art presentations. After 30 years of this festival in1996 a State Institution of Culture created the festival to become international. There was a recording of 'Jutrznia' of Krzysztof Penderecki and in 1999 was nominated for a Frederyk Award, which was the most prestigious prize of Polish phonographic industry. The purpose of the International Festival 'Wratislavia Cantans' was to be an open festival and have numerous nations culture presented. AMERICA

Rap music

There are many important facts about rap music from the book, Black Noise by Tricia Rose. She states that rap music is a confusing and noisy part of the contemporary American popular culture and rap music is known to draws a great amount of attention to the genre. In her chapter about "Voices from the Margins," she points out that the amounts of black women rappers who are aggressive pro-women lyricists are rare. Rap music actually is about real-life reflections of the rap ghetto which incorporate racism and the economic oppressions they deal with. They use those stories instead of the obscenities. Rap music incorporates the complex issues of social, cultural, and political views. Rap music began in the mid-1970s in South Bronx, New York City. Mostly the music expressed the pleasures and problems of black urban life.

Rock Music

Led.jpg

Rock music can be defined as a genre of popular music originating in the 1950s. It's a blend of black rhythm-and-blues with white country-and-western music. It is popular among people who live in the United States, along with rap music.

"Led Zeppelin: The Full Report From David Fricke" and it talks about how they had their first concert in 27 years at London's 02 arena back in December 2007. It talks about each song they played at the concert, and how much you could tell they still really enjoyed playing. Led Zeppelin was the biggest and loudest band in rock. Jimmy Page's now snow-white hair was still jet black; Robert Plant was a golden god, not yet a Viking elder, and the late John Bonham — whose death in 1980 abruptly ended Zeppelin's reign — still ruled the room. At the very end of the article it notes that Zeppelin left the building without making any reference to their future together. The only message they left behind was, "We were the best — and still are."

Warped Tour

warp.jpg

I read an article about the history of the Vans Warped tour. The information I found out was that most of the Warped Tours are held in large fields, outdoor concert venues, or parking lots. They have to have large area because there are many people that come to the Tours and watch the performances all day long. They Vans Warped Tour have several stages they perform on because it is an all day event and there are over 100 bands that normally participate.

History on the Vans Warped Tour: The Tour was created in 1993 by Kevin Lyman. Kevin worked on many different skateboard shows that started with ska and skate music. It was evolved overtime and now the music is more punk rock, metalcore, and post-hardcore bands.

Internationally they Tour plays in Europe, Japan, Australia, and the United States. Every year the popularity rises from the Tours because there are are increases in the bands that participate in the tour.  9

CONCLUSION

After all the research was done, we learned a lot about the different types of music and bands listened to in all three countries. We discovered bands that are popular in America are widely listened to in Italy. It was interesting to learn what music people from other countries listen to on a daily basis. Pop and rock music seem to be the most popular in Italy, and death metal seems to be listened to in Poland. Rap and Rock music was popular in the United States. There are also different music festivals that are put on in all three countries. They all seem different from each other. Some close off part of the city, like the San Remo music festival held in Italy, while the Warped Tour in America is held in areas with large stages because so many bands come to perform. It goes to show that even though different countries may have different popular genres of music, we are still are alike from listening and watching some of the same bands or musical artists.
